The agriculture, hunting and forestry sectors employ most of the region’s economically active population. This is attributed to a strong cattle-producing sector in both commercial and communal farming areas as well as to a well organized and established hunting farm sector. However, cattle farming remain the most important economic activity. The availability of elements such as lime, fluorspar, manganese and copper offer a number of processing opportunities, such as the manufacturing of cement and industrial lime. Tourism is one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the region, with development of guest and hunting farms and lodges becoming increasingly popular.

The main function of the social sector is to ensure a healthy and safe environment, aimed at improving the living standards of the disadvantaged and to protect the rights and dignity of those affected by prejudice and abuse.

Rehabilitation services include physiotherapy and occupational health services.

Curative Services

The division is responsible for the provision of Nursing, pharmaceutical and dental services.

Special Disease Program

The special disease program deals with the following programs:

• HIV/AIDS
• Tuberculosis (TB)
• Malaria

Management Information System (MIS)

The division is responsible for managing of information for evidence-based planning, monitoring and evaluation. This is done through the development of a sound MIS that provides information on financial, epidemiological, pharmaceutical, capital development and maintenance of facilities, human resource development, research and surveys.

Multi-Regional Technical Workshop

This division is responsible for the management and maintenance of medical equipments for three directorates (Otjozondjupa, Kunene and Erongo).

Multi-Regional Information Technology Services

This division is responsible for management and maintenance of information technology services such computers, e-mail and internet services for three directorates (Otjozondjupa, Kunene and Erongo).

District Health and Social Welfare Services x 4: Grootfontein, Okakarara, Okahandja and Otjiwarongo

The divisions are responsible for the co-ordination, management and implementation of activities at the district levels, which includes all the activities run by clinics, health centers and the district hospital.

Otjozondjupa region has one District Hospital in each district, two Health Centers and fifteen clinics.
